Well maybe not lions and tigers – you’ll have to go to Animal Kingdom for those – but bears are a common theme at Wilderness Lodge.

The Wilderness Lodge is the first Disney Resort Hotel to have an official mascot, the brown bear. If you look closely, you’ll see images of bears all over the resort in cartoon, silhouette, and even shadow format. Keep your eyes peeled for brown bear tracks in the sidewalk across the street from the resort bus stop.

But was the Wilderness Lodge built in the shape of a bear? That’s just one of the rumors swirling about. While it’s not well-known, it has been confirmed that that the shadows cast by the resort’s multi-peaked roof structure were designed to resemble a bear! You can see this well if you look at the resort from the vantage point of Bay Lake.

Some say that the bear in shadow is Humphrey the Bear, the cartoon mascot of the Wilderness Lodge Mercantile. Walt Disney Studios created Humphrey in 1950, and he starred in several Disney shorts with Goofy, then Donald. He was given his own series of theatrical shorts in 1955, but only two were produced. Humphrey is a VIP member of the Mickey Mouse Club, and he’s also had roles in Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, Goof Troop, Mickey Mouse Works, House of Mouse and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.

You can find Humphrey just outside the Mercantile, holding up Goofy, Donald and Mickey on the Mercantile totem pole. Click here for more photos of the Wilderness Lodge Mercantile. You can also find Humphrey on a lot of merchandise in the Mercantile, such as t-shirts, watches, pins, mini-totem-poles and more.

And since Humphrey has gained popularity due to his appearances in newer Disney programs, we hope to see him make more appearances around the Wilderness Lodge.

One of the best ways to spend a day in Disney World is hunting for Mickeys…Hidden Mickeys, that is! And the Wilderness Lodge has a few of the own for you to find.

These little guys have become a phenomenon in the Disney parks and resorts since they first started popping up. Not sure what a Hidden Mickey is? Basically, it’s defined as the front or side profile of Mickey Mouse (sometimes just his head; sometimes all of him) that has been camouflaged into something. You can find them in walls, rock formations, carpets, woodwork, murals and artwork, fabric, and more. Some even say that the aerial view of Disney’s Hollywood Studios forms a giant Hidden Mickey!

Disney Imagineers have consistently built these hidden icons into just about every Disney-related theme park and resort in the world, and of course you can find them at our beloved Wilderness Lodge, too! They’re all over the place — you just have to look.

To make the hunt even more fun, though, head to the front desk and pick up the official Wilderness Lodge Hidden Mickey Hunt! This two-page game is perfect for a rainy afternoon at the Lodge.

Of course, if you’d rather get a jump start on the hunt, just download and print the Hidden Mickey Hunt right here! It’s the same one you’ll get at the Lodge, so you can start thinking early. Just click on the images to enlarge.

Whispering Canyon Café is a pretty popular restaurant at Disney World, but it can be divisive among fans. Though most people seem to enjoy the setting and atmosphere, those who don’t seem very passionate in their disdain. Whispering Canyon is a love it or hate it kind of place, and many of those who hate it do so because they don’t have the right expectations.

Whispering Canyon Café is rowdy. It’s slapstick. It’s raucous. And it’s pretty darn funny if you go in with the right attitude. Servers, who often adopt an “old west” character and outlandish personality, are instructed to goof around with guests — almost to the point of jovial rudeness! In my visits to Whispering Canyon Cafe, I’ve had straws and napkins thrown at me, snarky comments made about how much diet soda I can down, and announcements made to the entire restaurant about my love life! So you can see why you might need to head into the Whispering Canyon Cafe ready for just about anything.

But, aside from the comedic atmosphere of the restaurant, you can also expect some pretty good food. The feature in this restaurant is its skillet meals. For breakfast, you can order all-you-can-eat eggs, Mickey waffles, sausage, bacon, potatoes, and biscuits and gravy; and for lunch and dinner, they’ll rustle up refillable skillets of barbecue pork ribs, chicken, pork sausage, beans, corn on the cob, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, and corn bread. For under $20, these refillable skillets register a good value as well! No worries, though, there are plenty of other menu items if the skillets aren’t for you.

Another great menu item at Whispering Canyon is the all-you-can-drink ice cream shakes! These are well respected in the shake-loving community, so order with abandon!

Now, here’s a little tip for you: whatever you do, don’t ask for ketchup unless you want to cause a scene!

Do you enjoy the Whispering Canyon Cafe, or did you have a less-than-stellar experience here? We’d love to hear about it in the comments below, or over on our facebook page!

This blog post is a cautionary tale! It’s one of those little-known nuances of the Wilderness Lodge that you won’t find out until you stay there, but that could easily ruin your dream vacation: the Courtyard View Room fiasco.

Courtyard View Rooms Are Great…
If you’ve done your research, you know that Wilderness Lodge has several room views, and that costs go up depending on room view desirability. For example, standard rooms have the lowest prices, and courtyard view rooms have the highest prices.

Up until just a few years ago, paying for a “courtyard view” room meant that you would automatically receive a room looking out onto the gorgeous Silver Creek Springs Pool, Bay Lake, and the Wilderness Lodge interior courtyard. And most importantly? You’d have that awesome view of Firerock Geyser spitting dozens of feet into the air every hour! Also, courtyard view room guests have an incredible view of Disney’s Electrical Water Pageant each evening as it floats through Bay Lake on its way to Fort Wilderness!

…But Beware the Bait and Switch!
So, what’s the problem, you ask? Well, rumor has it that some folks who’ve paid for a courtyard room have been placed in rooms looking out onto the Wilderness Lodge Villas courtyard. This means a view of Hidden Springs Pool (the Wilderness Lodge Villas pool)…and pretty much nothing else. There’s very little, if any, lake view from these rooms, and absolutely no geyser view. Not quite worth the same premium if you ask me!

Disney even says as much on their website when describing the standard room with courtyard view: “Standard room with courtyard view offers view of courtyard at The Villas at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, a pool, waterfall or of Bay Lake.”

Now, I am writing this post a little tongue-in-cheek in the “drama” department, but it never hurts to put in your request for a great geyser view, or “interior courtyard view,” the next time you book a courtyard view!

One of our favorite, and most difficult to answer, questions here at Wilderness Lodge Site is, “How can we be the Flag Family?”

For those who don’t know what I’m talking about when I mention the Flag Family, here’s a primer. Each and every single day at the Wilderness Lodge, one family is chosen to be the “Flag Family.” This “family” (could be a solo person or a group of any sort — it doesn’t have to be a family) rises very, very early in the morning to accompany a Wilderness Lodge cast member to the roof of the resort to raise the five flags that fly over the hotel: the American flag, the Florida State flag, the Walt Disney World flag, and two Wilderness Lodge flags.

However, it’s not easy to get a spot as the Flag Family! Reservations to take part go fast, so the best way to increase your chances to participate is to ask about being the Flag Family when you check in at the Wilderness Lodge. Ask the front desk cast member to check the schedule and see if there are any Flag Family openings during your stay!

We’ve never had the opportunity to take part in the fun ritual, but this video should give you a better idea of what takes place:
Even though the Wilderness Lodge opened recently — in 1994 — the resort is steeped in history and culture. Imagineers and architects spent years developing the intricate details of the resort, including the famous sentinels of the lobby — the totem poles.

Eagle and Raven Clans
When you first walk into the resort, you can almost feel the presence of two massive, 7-story, authentic totem poles. They’re located on either side of you as you look toward the back of the lobby out onto Bay Lake.

The 55-foot poles are known by the animals that top them — the Eagle and the Raven. Traditionally, Native Americans in the Northwest were able to trace their lineage back to either the Raven Clan or the Eagle Clan, and so these two have represented many of the tribes throughout the years.
The poles are true works of art, and were commissioned by Disney from one of the world’s preeminent Native American historians and totem pole artists. They took over a year to complete! And below the Eagle and the Raven, the totem poles are decorated with dozens of carved animals depicting stories and myths from Northwestern Native American culture.

And the Mickey Clan?
What’s that? You want to know about the other totem pole in the lobby? Well of course!

Over by the Wilderness Lodge Mercantile sits a piece of art that just about any Disney fan would love to have sitting in their living room! Humphrey the Bear provides the base of this innovative totem pole, upon which sit Goofy, Donald, and Mickey — all ready for a trip to the great outdoors!

And guess what — you CAN have it in your living room…well, a smaller version of it, anyway! You can purchase it in the Mercantile!
